It was a bold move by the Australian, Olympic surf team – to come up with a name that celebrated our Indigenous culture, while also putting a little sting in the tail of competitors. Far from a token gesture, the emergence of the Irakandjis Olympic squad is a great example of how our proud Indigenous history can be woven into the fabric of modern Australian life.
