Mavericks is no place for the faint hearted. Not only is it one of the heaviest waves in the world, you also have to take into account the cold water, the rocks on the inside and it is renowned to be sharky.
South-African big wave charger Matt Bromley has felt the full force of a Mavericks beat down before and has claimed it as one of his worst hold downs.
In episode three of his new Youtube series which looks at his worst wipeouts, and yes he has a catalogue of them, he talks about how a nose dive on the takeoff of a huge Mavericks bomb sent him down into an underwater waterfall.
After not getting a wave for a few hours, Matt decided to sit right in front of the Mavericks slab and when a set came in, he found himself padding positioned just under the lip. However, when he took off the wave went square and he ended up pin dropping to the bottom before being sucked back over in the lip. A great way to wake up after three hours sleep and a red-eye flight.
