As surfers we will go to great lengths to score uncrowded waves. It can often mean multiple flights, journeys through unchartered territory and more. However, not many would have thousands of dollars in their pocket to part with in order to gain exclusive access to a wave.
If you are one of the lucky few that do have such financial freedom then you could stay at Nihi resort on Sumba which is situated in front of the wave known as Occy’s left.
The resort has won multiple awards including the best hotel award multiple times.
In the latest episode of Tom De Souza’s Indo Motorcycle Diaries, he takes people behind the scenes of Indonesia’s only private wave.
He finds a local perspective from a surfer and former resort lifeguard who shares the pros and cons of having such a resort on the island. You also hear the story of how founder Claude Graves walked 80 miles along the beach to find the wave, dodging tribal wars along the way.
Claude and his wife Petra sold Nihi to billionaire Chris Burch in 2012. Burch pumped millions into the resort and turned the place into a luxury multi-million dollar business.
You can learn more about Nihi and Sumba in the next edition of our mag, issue 597, which is due to go on sale on 3 June.
