One actually wonders how many dramatic phrases have been tossed out there by commen - tators and surf scribes on the subject of of John John’s barrel antics at Backdoor? Meanwhile, this season the predominance of onshore winds meant that Pipe’s most celebrated virtuoso of the modern era had to improvise a little. Pipe has so much punch that for those with the prerequisite skill set, ruffled Backdoor faces still provide an ideal launch pad. “When the west wind shows up it is actually quite a treat to launch on the rights,” explains photog, Ryan Miller.
