Free-surfer Clay Marzo called out the World Surf League and its white knights on Instagram for a wildcard spot to compete at G-Land this year.
The goofy footer posted a video of himself getting a deep pit at a left reef- break which resembles Indonesia’s G-Land.
The 32-year-old’s Instagram caption was as followed “saw that the @wsl is having a contest at G Land in a few months. A big, long barrelling left. I would love to get the wildcard into that event. Who thinks WSL should give me the wildcard? I am ready to battle the world’s best in the barrel. Let’s do this!”
Marzo tagged multiple people such as WSL alumni Erik Logan, Jessi Miley-Dyer, Strider Wasilewski and Peter Mel. The man on a mission even called out his former sponsor Quicksilver in his attempt at a wildcard bid.
We asked Marzo “Why he wants to compete in Indo instead of other left breaks at Fiji or Tahiti?”. He replied in simple Marzo fashion “G-Land is a lot longer left”.
The Hawaiian is not your average free- surfer, many pros and influential figures in the sport are agreeing with the attempt.
GOAT Kelly Slater commentated “I’m all for it. Teahupo’o also” . While former pro Shane Beschen wrote “ Wildcard for Marzo at G Land would be insane , fully justified as he is one of the best tube riders and all-round surfers in the world with an incredibly entertaining and radical approach- Would be a fan favourite for sure.”
Surfing legends CJ Hobgood, Kalani Robb, Barton Lynch and Strider Wasilewski all want Marzo to have an opportunity to compete at Indo.
Who is Clay Marzo?
For those who are wondering “who the fuck is this Clay Marzo guy and why does he deserve a wildcard at G-Land?”
Marzo introduced himself to the world as a 16-year-old with a break-out performance in the 2005 surf film Young Guns 2. The Quicksilver produced movie followed Slater, Dane Reynolds, Julian Wilson, Jeremy Flores and many more around Indonesia scoring perfect waves. Marzo was 16 at the time, his creative style and fearless approach to hit the lip established himself as the next big star.
Even though Marzo’s career did not progress to the top 34, he has still been regarded as one of the best surfers in the world over the past decade. As recent as last year Marzo was a highlight in the popular Snapt4 film, people are still in awe of the surfing genius.
Marzo has only competed once on the world stage and that was at Pipeline back in 2010. His former sponsor Quicksilver will be hosting the event and have the option to give Marzo the wildcard spot at G-Land.
Marzo is a surfer’s favourite surfer and will be a threat at any left-hand barrel. Surfing fans will be eager to watch the legend compete and it will create more hype around the much anticipated event at G-Land in May.
