The Quiksilver and Roxy Pro’s presented by Land Rover are likely to commence this weekend with a promising swell set to arrive on cue for the opening 2013 events of the ASP Men’s and Women’s World Championship Tours.
Contest Director Jake Paterson (Aus) is anticipating an action packed weekend as the world’s best surfers commence their 2013 campaigns in the high performance waves on the southern end of Australia’s Gold Coast.
“We have a great week of swell coming. It’s just a bit unfortunate at the moment that we have a big hole out the back of Snapper Rocks but fortunately for us, we have a great bank down at Rainbow Bay, so it looks like we are going to get away pretty early,” said Paterson.
With Rainbow Bay located adjacent to the main contest site of Snapper Rocks the logistics of relocating one break north wont be an issue for contest organizers.
“The wind is actually going to start coming from the south, enough of this easterly breeze we have had for the last week. It will be offshore and really fun rippable waves at Rainbow. So we will see some high flying action from the worlds best this weekend,” added Paterson.
Official forecasters ‘Coastalwatch Plus’ predict Friday’s first pulse to produce solid three-to-four foot plus conditions for the Moskova Trials on Friday March 1st. This initial swell is likely to overlap with a second pulse arriving for the start of the main events on Saturday 2nd March.
The favorable forecast prompted Paterson to predict a possible early finish.
“We are going to have a really good swell this weekend and then it’s going to mellow out a bit during the middle of the week and then we will get another swell in the long range forecast so we could have thing wrapped up by the end of next week.”
When competition commences, up first will be defending Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast champion Taj Burrow (Aus), 34, up against Bede Durbidge (AUS), 30, and Raoni Monteiro (BRA), 30, in Heat 1 of Round 1.
