Brent Dorrington claims 6.0 Cash for Tricks

Brenno takes “walk up start final” against Gabriel Medina
Reading Time: 2 minutes

ZARAUTZ, Euskadi/Basque Country, Spain – Brent Dorrington (Gold Coast, AUS) won the ASP Europe Specialty 6.0 Cash for Tricks Zarautz event Sunday in the Basque Country, the talented competitor unleashing the most impressive flying tricks to finish atop a solid contingent including Cory Lopez (Florida, USA).

Dorrington, a full-time ASP Star Series competitor and renowned for his progressive surfing abilities, was in excellent form making the most out of the clean three-foot (one meter) waves on offer and finding launching ramps to rocket himself up in the air and land some impressive moves.

“I am really happy to win this event because after watching the guys compete in the previous one at Lacanau I was really excited to get a chance to enter it,” Dorrington said. “I am also glad Gabriel (Medina) didn’t show-up for the final because he’s probably the best at doing airs.”

Last stop of this summer’s four 6.0 Cash for Tricks event that went from Seignosse to Anglet, to Lacanau before setting-up in Zarautz, yesterday’s 6.0 Cash for Tricks Zarautz once again matched expectations, the unique format of competition being very popular amongst professional surfers.

“It’s a great concept and I’d like to see it get bigger actually,” Dorrington said. “I hope we can see it extended to Australia and the United States because it’s really what many of us love to do along with regular ASP Star and Prime events.”

Finishing second overall despite not showing-up for the final due to his ASP 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz Semifinal against Heitor Alves, Gabriel Medina confirmed he was one of the world’s best aerial specialists. At 17 only, the brilliant ASP World Junior No. 3 and current ASP World Rankings No.49 left the strongest impression in the 6.0 Cash for Tricks Series.

“It’s a different type of event and it suits my surfing really well I guess,” Medina said. “With my Semifinal scheduled right after the Cash for Tricks final, I chose to focus on the ASP 6-Star event but I’ve had a great time competing in the Nike 6.0 events this summer and I hope it keeps going.”

First ever ASP Europe Specialty sanctioned Series, the 6.0 Cash for Tricks is now over after four events, four champions and an attractive €40000 overall prizepurse distributed over the summer. From Joan Duru’s win in Seignosse to Brent Dorrington’s victory at Zarautz, including Reubyn Ash and Gabriel Medina’s brilliant wins in Anglet and Lacanau, the 6.0 Cash for Tricks Series have matched expectations.

Delivering an impressive show of progressive surfing with invitees all unleashing their most spectacular surfing to battle for attractive prizemoney, the fresh concept of competition has succeeded in adding some exciting action to the intense ASP Star and Prime events of the summer in Europe.

Gathering is a short film from independent filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, the creator of the award-winning left of centre surf films Lines From a Poem, Seaworthy and The Heart & The Sea. The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home in the sacred playgrounds of the Far North Coast of New South Wales. Ultimately, Gathering celebrates how diversity and difference in ecosystems, relationships and surfing contribute to the preciousness of life. Gathering is easy on the eyes and ears and Tracks Magazine is proud to present it to you. Nathan Oldfield is a maverick, a filmmaker who wants a surf movie to say something important, to move us and make us grateful for the sea around us and the life within us.
