Action this week was centered around the Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing with men’s and women’s ASP WQS 6-Star events and both boys and girls divisions of the juniors.
On the men’s ASP WQS ratings upward movement, we see Brett Simpson from 9th to 5th and Rodrigo Dornelles from 28th to 18th. Remarkably, not much else probably because ASP Dream Tour surfers Fanning, Hobgood, De Souza, Slater, Bourez and Curran stole all those big points, which they will most likely not use.
In the women’s event, Courtney Conlogue outpointed defending champion Malia Manuel while Laura Enever and Carissa Moore came equal 3rd. For Courtney, this was her 4th ASP WQS win, but by far, her biggest.
ASP Pro Junior winners were Malia Manuel in the girls division and Kai Barger, current ASP World Junior champion in the boys. This was Malia’s first ASP Pro Junior title, and for Kai, his 3rd victory in the ASP Pro Junior ranks.
Meanwhile in Bali at Keramas, the ASP Grade-5 Billabong Pro Junior was won by Dean Bowen, defeating fellow Aussie Teale Vanner. This was also a first time win for Dean.
Over in Spain at the ASP Grade-1 Vans Pro Junior at San Sebastian, Thomas Petterson was victorious in the boy’s division for his first win this year while in the girl’s Marie De Jean now has two wins.
ASP WQS ratings movers:
Womens – The deadlock between Carissa Moore and Coco Ho has finally been broken with Carissa hitting the No. 1 spot. However, seeing Coco is carrying a zero for her 5th best score and is only 240 points behind, she is actually in a better position. Sally Fitzgibbons has jumped from 15th to equal 8th with Ornella Pellizzari who moved from 4th. Sage Erickson up from 14th to 7th and most others, not much movement upwards except Rebecca Woods up from 12th to 5th.
Downwards, other than Ornella, were Nikita Robb from 9th to 13th.
