As you get older it becomes increasingly difficult to get all the boys together in one place. Everyone is juggling various commitments, people are on completely different paths and it’s not often you get the chance to be in the same place at the same time as your close group of friends.
Which is why, when it does happen and you all come together for a particular occasion it is usually special and a moment to savour.
In this case, that moment was a last minute boat trip to chase one of the many freak swells that has been lighting up the start of dry season in Indo in recent weeks. Those on board were: Soli Bailey, Sheldon Simkus, Cam Richards, Jai Glindeman, Luke Condon, Zac Skyring as well as filmers Layne Stratton, Joe Duerrot and photographer Swilly who was on hand to capture plenty shots.
The boys boarded the Mangalui which just so happened to be free despite the crew only booking it a week prior. Usually these types of boat trips have to be organised months in advance as they fill up quickly.
Run by Captain Lips, the Mangalui has been going for 30 years and operates trips through the Ments and the Banyaks.
Trying to get this group of surfers together at the last minute would have been difficult enough. Sheldon is usually juggling QS and CS events alongside surfing every swell at his home on the Gold Coast. Soli has been on a quest of his own in recent months, popping up at various swell events around the world and charging harder than most. Cam Richards came from the other side of the world just for the trip too.
However, the last minute call paid off and the boys scored pumping waves in the Ments spending most of their ten days onboard getting tubed, including a session at six to eight foot Greenbush with no one else out.
