WSL Suspends Gabriel Medina’s Step-Father Charlie For Six Months

Will miss the Australian leg of the 2017 championship tour.
Reading Time: < 1 minute

This week the WSL announced that Gabriel Medina’s step-father, Charlie Rodrigues, had been suspended from the competitor’s area for six months following an incident in Portugal involving league officials in 2016.

Details of what transpired remain guarded. However, it is believed to involve the judges following Gabriel Medina’s Round 3 loss to Jeremy Flores during the 2016 MEO Rip Curl Pro. Medina required an 8-point ride to overtake Flores and take the win. He controversially fell short, bagging a 7 and consequently bowed out of the event and world title race.

Charlie is one of the most passionate characters you’ll find on tour. His body language is like progressive dance. He’s often seen yelling for his son, appearing steely focused in a state of perpetual analysis. He shares a familial and professional relationship with Gabe and it’s no surprise his passion can boil over.

According to the WSL, “In addition to personally apologizing to the officials involved, Mr. Medina has fully cooperated with the League's investigation into the incident and has accepted the sanction of suspension (effective October 2016 through April 2017).”

"I regret my actions in Portugal last October," Charles Rodrigues said. "That is not the kind of person I strive to be and does not reflect the values of my family. It was an intense part of the season and I responded poorly to it. I want to apologize to the WSL, the officials and supporters of this community. This sport has given everything to my family and continues to provide a platform for the world's best surfers. Good luck to everyone this season."

Watching webcasts of the Australian leg won’t be the same. Love him or loathe him, characters like Charlie add spice to a sometimes dull tour. See you in Rio Charlie!

Gathering is a short film from independent filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, the creator of the award-winning left of centre surf films Lines From a Poem, Seaworthy and The Heart & The Sea. The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home in the sacred playgrounds of the Far North Coast of New South Wales.
