Red Head’s Col Smith is best remembered for his radical backhand attack, pioneering channel bottoms and winning the Sunset Pro Class Trials with his back to the wall in 1977. Pipe Master, Rory Russell, once called Col “the most underrated surfer in the world.” Tragically Col passed away at age 31 after a battle with cancer. Now a new documentary ‘Channel Man’ explores the legend of a wild-living goofy footer from just south of Newcastle, who had a profound influence on surfing in his short but colourful life. Featuring also, Wayne Lynch, Mark Richards, Michael Ho, Tom Carroll, Terry Richardson and Rory Russell.
