I started shooting footage for Rise in Angourie in 2000, after I’d completed Five North Swells. It was the first surfing film I edited at home on an iMac. It features Mick Fanning, Trent Munro, Jeremy Walters, Navarin Fox, Woody Jack, Laurie Towner and Will Webber. The opening wave, shot on Super 8, is my brother John at Lennox Head in 1982, on his first thruster, shaped by Greg. The film flew under the radar at the time because it was the last surfing film released in Australia on VHS and not DVD.
I’ve edited it down to half and hour, from its original 60 minutes, as concentration spans have shortened in the intervening decades. Friends have commented that watching it now reminds them of simpler, happier times. We shot the footage for the final song, by Carla Werner, between 1974 and 1984.
