Lucas’ Chumbo’ Chianca’s big-wave performances in the last few years have entrenched his spot as one of the most respected chargers on the planet. From interviewing Billy Kemper to spotting Shaun Tomson paying homage in our Insta comment sections and also talking to some of the new-gen big-wave crew, everyone’s frothing on the man they call ‘Chumbo’.
The 27-year-old has been on a roll. From the Brazilian’s standout performances at Nazare to getting out of his comfort zone at Californian big-wave Mavericks, and also brilliantly charging slabs such as Teahupo’o. This clip gives us a behind-the-scenes look into his approach in his last two big-wave seasons and how his versatility may be the key factor to his dominant run.
Chianca is also hilarious and poetic, just like his brother Joao (CT surfer/ Supertubos champ). He’s got some funny quotes in the clip, such as this one about the mental process of riding down the face of a Nazare giant.
“It was like there was an angel and a devil on each shoulder.”
‘Go!’ the devil said!”
Overall, it’s inspiring footage of someone who embodies a deep love for big-wave surfing and is entirely dedicated to his craft.
Enjoy!
