It’s not often that CT surfers get the chance to share a lineup together while being free of the competitive pressures that are etched in their brains for the majority of the year.
However, following the conclusion of last year’s CT, Yago Dora, Jack Robinson, Ian Gentil and João Chianca all went on a trip together to score some big blue left hand barrels in Fiji.
The trip was captured by Loïc Wirth and Dan Scott who have put the footage together in a new film titled “Gauna”, which means “Time” in Fijian.
The 22 minute film on YouTube features the quartet of CT surfers expertly trading cinematic left hand kegs while grinning from ear to ear and sharing jokes with each other – something they don’t always get to do when under the pressure of competing against one another and the rest of the world’s top 36.
When talking about the film, Loïc said: “After a big year competing against each other on the world tour and affecting each other’s results directly, Yago Dora, Jack Robinson, Ian Gentil, and João Chianca had justified reasons not to go on a trip together right away.
“But they did; they saw a good swell going towards Fiji and went there together. Once they were there, no one was thinking about who got the best wave, the best clip, no one even cared about watching the clips at night. It was just about surfing and friendship.
“I feel truly lucky to have been invited to film those days, alongside the amazing Dan Scott, and witness this beautiful reminder of why we all do this in the first place. Because of our love for the ocean, which keeps reminding us, it can be reciprocated.
“Gauna means Time in Fijian – this elusive thing which we forgot about during our stay.”
