While South Africa is stereotypically known for its rugby, braai and a world class right-hand point break named J-Bay. It’s also home to numerous barreling beach breaks which can often be scored with few in sight.
Those sand bottom caverns are a contributing factor in free surfer Brendon Gibbens’ decision to trade Huntington slop for a return home to the Western Cape.
Brendon’s South African stoke is evident in his new clip “Beegus Christ”, which was released earlier this week on Dane Reynolds’ Chapter 11 TV YouTube channel.
After being forced to go under the radar and surf his local river jetties in Costa Mesa while he waited for his US citizenship, Brendon, aka “Beegus Christ”, has spent the past year back in Cape Town surfing regularly and surrounding himself with a local contingent of hungry surfers who he believes have a “good attitude” and are inspiring his own performance.
The video is filled with some of his best surfing to date as he takes to the air and trades cylinders with the likes of Jordy Smith, Mikey February, Eli Beukes, Shane Sykes, Luke Slijpen and Max Elkington.
In the video’s bio, Dane said: “This surfing is raw and energetic and inspires me to get out there and demo some crests of balls of energy that roll through the sea.”
