Thousands of spectators lined the Cueto cliffs in Santander last month as the 10th edition of the La Vaca Gigante big wave event was held in Northern Spain.
The event, which translates to “the giant cow” in English, saw 24 local and international competitors battle it out in XXL conditions for the 10,000 euro prize.
Basque surfer Indar Unanue took home the top prize, securing two 9.00+ rides in the final to give him a total of 29.53 out of 30 as his top score of 9.93 was doubled as part of the competition format.
Local surfer Nano Riego finished second with a heat total of 22.21 and fellow Cantabria charger Nicolas Garcia Lopez rounded off the podium with a 20.61 heat total.
Commenting on the win, Indar said: “The organisation has done a great job and has been right with the call for the event because it is a complicated wave to get the timing right. I came wanting to make a final, and I went for it once I saw myself there. I was very excited to win the championship because, after several podiums, I was really looking forward to it. Thank you to all the riders, safety patrol, public and organisation staff for making it possible.”
