West Oz charger Ned Hart hit his debut at the Tasmanian big-wave spot out of the park. We got hold of the footage of one of Ned’s ride at Shippies earlier this week and shared it on our socials. The clip went viral with reactions flooding to the comment section of the gnarly ride. Pro Surfers such as Laura Enever and Kelly Slater were also frothing in the IG comment section. Slater paid his respects by commenting, “such a rad ride”. Imagine the boost of confidence after a homage like that by the GOAT?
Hart told Tracks that it was his first surf at Shippies, and he had to borrow a board because he didn’t have a tow board yet. It’s pretty wild for Hart to have that much belief in his skills at such a young age in legit life-threatening conditions.
Other than the successful first ride at the break, he would go back out and charge another mutant wall that looked at least to be 20-foot. The ugly face would close out on him, and the grom copped a brutal beating.
This didn’t bother Ned, who was absolutely frothing on the Shippies experience telling videographer Tim Bonython that he caught some of the best waves of his life in the session. Ned was psyching and couldn’t keep the smile off his face. And deservingly so.
Shout out to Tim for all the different angles in the clip. It was a doozy.
Enjoy!
UPDATED INFO
Shortly after posting this article, we received news that young charger Harry-Holmer Cross was knocked unconscious after a wipeout in the same Shipsterns session last Sunday. It goes to show how gnarly this wave can be, as he’s lucky to be alive after nearly drowning.
Fortunately, Harry was resuscitated at the break and sent to the Royal Hobart Hospital on a helicopter. He’s currently still in hospital after suffering severe head trauma and ear damage from the wipeout. Harry is on the path to recovery now; a Go Fund Me Page has been set up to help with his future operations and medical fees. Click here to donate
