Tracks presents the next instalment in our three part series with surfing’s original anti-hero, Christian Fletcher. The Californian delivers his take on the state of progressive surfing today and boy is it a doozy. “I’m unimpressed,” he says sitting in our Coolangatta apartment dressed in his pressed white shirt and shades. “They all do the same tricks, they all make the same tricks and they all fall on the same tricks.” Fletcher’s rep as one of the original aerialist of his generation still holds the test of time. “I shouldn’t have more tricks than the top pros, he adds. “I’m 45 years old and a 45 year-old man shouldn’t have more tricks than the top professionals in the world who are young men.” And if you were wondering if he thinks the tour has helped pro surfing evolve? “The air reverse is the new cutback. It’s still four to the shore it’s just a different four.”
