On Saturday April 24th, the Peninsula Surfriders Club held its annual single fin classic in support of charity organization Challenge. In harsh, wintery conditions, over 80 PSC members and guests crawled from their warm beds to don their wetsuits in support of Challenge to make waves for kids with Cancer at Gunnamatta.
And, whilst conditions on the day weren’t ideal, the action around the beach was not to be missed with great 1970s surfboards on display, some fancy dress competitors, and of course hilarious surfing highlights (and lowlights) on the unconventional equipment. Caiden Fowler, Amy Hackett, Ronnie Gorringe and Liam McCafferty won the open, womens, over 50s, and over 35 divisions respectively.
The real winner on the day was Challenge however as the club had organized a web-based fundraising campaign prior to the event. And with major prize incentives and fantastic support provided by event sponsors TriggerBros Surfboards, Billabong, Rusty, and Insight, Spikas Retro Surfboards, Oke Surfboards, JB Hifi and Four N Twenty Pies, combining with such a worthy cause, the total raised topped $10,000. Liam McCafferty and Kerri Pope took home a surf gear pack for their highest fundraising effort and summed up the clubs’ work perfectly – “everyone should be proud of supporting such a fantastic charity and taking part in a great event. It reminds us of just how lucky we are.” Jane Featherstone, Morgan Winch, Gavin Duffy, Tim Antonie, and Sam McCorrist were also rewarded for their large fundraising and contributions.
As Challenge’s Australian Marketing Manager, McCorrist’s work was doubly important. “I’d like to give a big thanks to the Peninsula Surfriders Club and everyone involved in running the event and making it such a success. We look forward to more fun at the beach with PSC next year!”
The club’s president Lachy McDonald closed speeches at the after party/celebration by saying “We are extremely proud as a club to raise a significant amount for such a worthy cause and aim to go bigger and better for Challenge in years to come.”

Community Involvement
Peninsula Surfriders Club has been active in the community throughout its long history. The club provides youth with the opportunity to become involved in an organisation that competes on a regular basis and offers awards for excellence within that structure. We pride ourselves on integrity and honesty which is reflected in the character of our membership.
The club has also been involved with local residents in an effort to reduce the effluent discharged into Gunnamatta Beach. This has become an important environment issue for which local member, Greg Hunt, has worked hard to correct. The Peninsula Surfriders Club has also taken the initiative to work with National Parks on the surrounding bush landscape. Together we have planted over 100 native grasses and shrubs to help retard the erosion of Gunamatta’s sand dunes.
The club holds regular committee meetings to discuss and establish strategies that can involve and help the local community.
