Mullet Pro is a community surf event, which was created by mates in 2015 to improve awareness around mental health issues and raise funds for local grass roots organisations. It’s a fun-first surf comp on foam boards. Prizes are awarded for expression, be it surfing, dress-ups, dance-offs and all round good times. There are however genuine contest winners and it does get a little serious once the foamy froth kicks in. There are A-grade, B-grade and girls divisions, encouraging surfers at all levels to have a go.
The event is held annually at Tamarama beach, a charming nook between Bronte and Bondi, which was once home to the Wonderland City theme park.
The unique vibe of the event inspires some outrageous fashion choices. From up above on the Tamarama cliffs those wandering by will see competitors in suits, dresses, wigs – whatever goes – these outfits turn the beach and the line up into a colourful spectacle.
The Mullet Pro has a rep for being the feel-good day of the year in the eastern beaches. Some event devotes even fly-in from overseas just to make there.
This year over 100 competitors took part, jinking and jiving beneath sunny, Autumn skies as a three foot east swell tossed up rippable peaks. We couldn’t have asked for a better day.
Bronte lifeguard, Michael “Mouse” Jenkins won the A-Grade event. Viviane Nyugen took out the Ladies, and Ben Feselet won the B’s. But in truth everyone was a winner.
Thanks to Curly Lewis Brewing Co. for the refreshing ales and hosting the event party, where Dan Mac (Art vs Science) was on the decks and a bunch of locally donated auction items raised funds for this years cause – a close friend and Mullet pro family member who is battling cancer.
All up we raised almost 10K.
Event organisers Earl Weir, Joshua Ku and Perth Standlick would sincerely like to thank everyone involved, from sponsors to all those who helped make the event happen and brought the good vibes, the fresh threads, the quality turns and the dance moves. A special shout out to those that could not be there with us – Myron and Jon Love, and Sam Keating, whose spirits epitomise what the Mullet Pro is al about.
Till next year.
