For the last week surfers on the East Coast of Australia have debated how the inbound swell from Tropical Cyclone Gita would play out. Although the swell was looking the goods, the distant origin of the storm meant the system itself would play little part in the local winds.
As the swell began to show on the Gold Coast, funky east-northeast winds put a dampener on the excitement. Four-foot lines rifled down the course of the superbank, but the onshores meant little tube-time. That was until yesterday, when the wind swung gloriously offshore and the swell reached its full potential.
Kirra was the standout, as those lucky enough to scrap into a bomb, or even luckier, be towed straight into one through the crowd, enjoyed some gaping caverns only the jewel of the Gold Coast could conjure up.
