Man, what a season. To be jolly? No. Well, not apart from celebrations over our fearless leader, Tracks Editor Luke Kennedy and his incredibly lucky escape. If the guy had been on a boat in the wilderness somewhere – gone. It pays to pole axe yourself, if you must, in a non third world locale. Honestly though, he picked the only surf for the last 3 weeks to nail himself, because there has barely been a wave before and there hasn’t been one since. It’s been the slowest few weeks since the National Lichen Racing Titles, and thank god for Honolulu and Waikiki. The ‘Ki has more characters than a Shakespeare synopsis, there are bizarre street theatre antics that can be hilarious at times, like the gold painted statue that suddenly moves and shows himself as a man, giving unwary passersby the best fright ever. I find it very funny when people get scared, as long as it isn’t me. There’s silver coated guys, paper-mache dudes, street dancer types and mai tai interludes; longboarding fun, on azure blue days, fun in the sun, in ten different ways; can’t help but love, reforming waves that roll in, flying frigates above, and it’s cool to drop in! The beach boys don’t mind, ‘cos the ‘Ki is a laugh, they’ll share waves, that’s fine, just say: “let’s go halves!” Then when you’re starved, go to Chinatown, Peking Duck’ll get carved, TsingTao beer wash it down! So if Sunset lets ya down, or there’s no Pipeline, you can still go to town, and things will be fine!
