Piping Hot and Surfers for Climate Together for Bondi Twin Fest

Not your typical environmental charity…
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Surfers for Climate is wading into the murky waters of surfing competitions, partnering up with iconic 70’s surf brand-turned-clean oceans focused fashion leader in Target – Piping Hot this coming Sunday at Bondi Beach.

A straightforward affair with the description of the event stating “Two fins. Two divisions. All genders welcome”, this new event is hoping to provide a fun atmosphere that can celebrate the twin fin craft while educating the masses about climate change. A word from Surfers for Climate CEO Josh Kirkman on the inspiration behind the collaboration:

“I’ve always been a fan of celebrating vintage craft within the environmental movement. We go on a lot about the need for more surfers to get involved in the climate conversation for our ocean and one of the barriers to action for many surfers is the feeling of hypocrisy when it comes to the craft they ride.”

“What a lot of surfers don’t realise is that the best board to ride (environmentally) is the one you have, or the one you can buy second hand, so it’s awesome to partner with Piping Hot to put on a unique event at Bondi Beach that can act as a celebration of a stylish way of surfing, that also acts as a take-off point for surfers to learn more about the advocacy work we are doing at Surfers for Climate.”

Surfers for Climate is scaling up its ambition level after the resurfacing of PEP-11 off Sydney’s coast a couple of months ago and the race that is underway between the NSW Liberal Government and a handful of Independent Members of the NSW Parliament and some candidates to ‘out-policy’ each other in opposing PEP-11 and more.

“What we have seen recently is a renewed push for more comprehensive legislation to remove new oil and gas from the table in NSW from the NSW Liberal Government, as well as a handful of Independent incumbents and candidates. It’s really positive for the people of NSW in that this discussion is moving beyond political ideology (all are agreeing on opposing oil and gas mining in NSW waters) and signifies to us that a broader national campaign is what is needed, and possible to really move the needle on the issue.”

“Holding events like the Bondi Twin Fest with Piping Hot provides an opportunity for us to connect with surfers on their terms and talk about the bigger issues, and see what journey each and every surfer wants to go on into climate action. We’re stoked to be holding this event at such an iconic location and in partnership with the Bondi Ocean Lovers Festival too.”

The Bondi Twin Fest presented by Piping Hot, Surfers for Climate, Surfing NSW, Tracks and Varuna Surfboards will take place on the 19th of March at Bondi Beach. Entries are still live and winners from each of the two divisions (Under 16 and Over 16) will get their hands on a fresh Varuna Surfboards Twinnie. There’s tons of other prizes and even an after party scheduled with the local brewers Curly Lewis too. Should be a blast. Click here to book your spot before they run out.

Gathering is a short film from independent filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, the creator of the award-winning left of centre surf films Lines From a Poem, Seaworthy and The Heart & The Sea. The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home in the sacred playgrounds of the Far North Coast of New South Wales. Ultimately, Gathering celebrates how diversity and difference in ecosystems, relationships and surfing contribute to the preciousness of life. Gathering is easy on the eyes and ears and Tracks Magazine is proud to present it to you. Nathan Oldfield is a maverick, a filmmaker who wants a surf movie to say something important, to move us and make us grateful for the sea around us and the life within us.
