O’Neill Coldwater Classic – Heat Draw

All the match-ups and a brief run down on what's going down.

All the match-ups and a brief run down on what’s going down.

Local O’Neill wildcard Ratboy Collins will need to go big to progress through heat with either Slater or Parkinson.

The clock’s ticking down as we brace for event 9 of 10 on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), the O’Neill Cold Water Classic.

Northern California is home to not only cold water, but plenty of kelp, seals and white sharks – and for the next 10 days the world’s best surfers too.

The event is to be held primarily (conditions dependent) at Santa Cruz’s Steamer Lane from November 1 – 11, 2012.

The wave itself offers some doughy sections for big rail turns and even an air section at times on the inside. Some goofyfooters may even have their eye’s on the peak that breaks across from the point which offers a predominantly left-hander back towards the point. It may suffice for a score if priority is a problem in inconsistent waves off the point.

With five surfers mathematically still in the hunt for the title and four close enough you could throw a blanket over them it’s going to be an exciting event (waves permitting).

Wildcard # 1 Jason ‘Ratboy’ Collins (event sponsor O’Neills pick).

Wildcard # 2 Will be winner of the 12 man invite only trials: Invited athletes include several Santa Cruz locals Nat Young, Bud Freitas, Noi Kaulukukui, Adam Replogle, Josh Mulcoy, Randy Bonds, Shaun Burns, Josh Loya and Jimmy Herrick, as well as, Johny Craft (Carmel, CA), Cory Lopez (Indian Rocks, FL) and Tim Reyes (Huntington Beach, CA).

Let’s get it on!

Seven free surfers embarked on a voyage to boldly go where no man had gone before.

Not that long ago, in an island chain far, far away, seven free surfers embarked on a voyage to boldly go where no man had gone before. Equipped with an array of surfboards, a packet of crayons and two ukuleles, their chances of success were slim. In pursuit of perfection, they were forced to navigate under the radar of a fleet of imperial boat charters. Despite numerous obstacles, the rebel alliance of wave-riding beatniks continued to make Galactik Tracks into a new surfing cosmos; their search for a Nirvana reaching its climax when they arrived at… The Island of Nowhere.

The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home on the Far North Coast of NSW.

Gathering is a short film from independent filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, the creator of the award-winning left of centre surf films Lines From a Poem, Seaworthy and The Heart & The Sea. The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home in the sacred playgrounds of the Far North Coast of New South Wales. The film explores Rastovich’s ideas around how the tension between the industrial and the natural in the surfing world unfolds in that place. Ultimately, Gathering celebrates how diversity and difference in ecosystems, relationships and surfing contribute to the preciousness of life. Gathering is easy on the eyes and ears and Tracks Magazine is proud to present it to you. Nathan Oldfield is a maverick, a filmmaker who wants a surf movie to say something important, to move us and make us grateful for the sea around us and the life within us. His films are quiet, beautiful and brimming with sacred purpose. Tim Winton, Acclaimed Australian Novelist
