These days we’re all aware that Ireland is home to some fickle but fine waves. However, there aren’t many of us up to speed on the colourful history of surfing in the country.
Made In Ireland is a three part documentary series by Mikey Corker that aims to showcase the true history of the past time in his homeland.
In part one we meet 64-year-old Irish surfing pioneer Barry Britton, who was one of the first to ride a wave in Ireland. His mother, who owned a hotel, returned from California with a bunch of Malibus for the guests to ride, but they immediately captivated a young Barry. By his own admission the guests never got a look in as he commandeered the crafts, and in doing so kickstarted surfing in Ireland.
