Nine-year-old grommet takes us on a Hawaiian adventure most kids (and adults) can only dream about. |
INTRO: Like most surf obsessed grommets Kyuss King lives to ride waves. When told he was going to Hawaii for a holiday Kyuss took it upon himself to write a blog each day he was away. It was a big deal going to Hawaii you see – not just because of his young age – but because he was staying with 1988 world champion Barton Lynch. So from base camp at BL’s house (nestled behind Sunset Beach) join us daily as Kyuss takes us on a fun filled Hawaiian adventure most kids (and adults) can only dream about.
Note for Parents: This is a grommet specific 10 part summer holiday special with totally kid safe content.

LEAVING AUSTRALIA…
The journey begins…
Kyuss at Sydney International Airport (with little bro Rasmus) ready to head off to Hawaii.
Saying goodbye to our boards….. hope they make it… My little brother [Rasmus] didn’t like watching our boards disappear.
DAY 1 – HAWAII
Landed… Very tired….
Barton Lynch’s mate Josh picked us up at the Honolulu airport at 8.30am.
Josh didn’t get the message that he was picking up five people and loads of boards and luggage…
We didn’t think the car was going to be able to fit it all.
We started loading the car… Nine boards on the roof, Dad, Mum, Rasmus, Me, Barton and luggage everywhere.
A super tight fit, the car was loaded and bottoming out on any bump so we just cruised and had a slow fun ride all the way to the North Shore…. Josh is a champ.
Me, BL and the Limo.
We arrived at Barton Lynch’s house which is right behind the breaks Backyards / Sunset. The house is a classic Hawaiian beach house. The best set up. Has a separate Boardroom, full of epic Hawaiian big boards and cruiser bikes.
We hadn’t had much sleep on the plan and we tried to have a quick sleep at Barton’s when we arrived, but I was so excited to be in Hawaii that I couldn’t sleep.
Kyuss checks Sunset Beach for the first time.
The house is only a few feet away from the sand and right on surf spot “Backyards”. I checked the waves and it looked fun.
Barton checked the buoy report and said it was building all day, I wanted to have a surf and Barton said to go now before it got to big for me.
Kyuss cruising the back road to Sunset with Barton.
I had my first surf out Sunset with my Dad and Barton.
It was 3 – 4 feet with some bigger ones… I got some siiiick waves.
It started getting bigger and bigger while I was out there so I caught a few more and came in… When I came in I saw an eight wave set go through that would of smashed me so I was stoked I got in and out before it got to crazy for me.
