Nine-year-old grommet takes us on a Hawaiian adventure most kids (and adults) can only dream about.

INTRO: Like most surf obsessed grommets Kyuss King lives to ride waves. When told he was going to Hawaii for a holiday Kyuss took it upon himself to write a blog each day he was away. It was a big deal going to Hawaii you see – not just because of his young age – but because he was staying with 1988 world champion Barton Lynch. So from base camp at BL’s house (nestled behind Sunset Beach) join us daily as Kyuss takes us on a fun filled Hawaiian adventure most kids (and adults) can only dream about.

Note for Parents: This is a grommet specific 10 part summer holiday special with totally kid safe content.

Name: Kyuss King // Age: 9 // From: Byron Bay // Thoughts on girls: Rascal’s // Fav wave: The Pass and Duranbah // Fav surfer: Bruce Irons // Starsign: Gemini // Results: Under 9’s Club Champion 2009 / 1st BL’S Blast Off / Oddity: Wide cartoon character like feet.

DAY 2 – Rock Piles

Big sleep in till 10am… super jet lagged… All of us.
As Barton had told me the waves had built all night and were pumping with solid 6 – 8 foot sets at some magnet spots, we road our bikes and checked all the breaks down to Rock Piles. Rock Piles was pumping so we stopped there and watched some locals charging some pitching 6 – 8 footers… Heavy waves…  Not ready for that yet.

The waves and Rocks of Rock Piles making Kyuss look very small.

My brother Rasmus was going around collecting all the broken boards at Rock Piles… Our room is all ready full of them.

I had an accident on the bike on Day 1 and the sore from it had gotten infected and was getting worse all day… Mum and dad freaked when they saw it and we spent the rest of the day driving around trying to see a Doctor around the Haleiwa area… No doctors could see me.

Dad was freaking and wanted to get it sorted and checked… We ended up back at the House and Bartons mate called “Buddy” took me and Dad to the emergency Hospital in Kahuku, we were there for a while, got checked and got some antibiotics, the doctor said it was going to be OK and said I could still surf – I was stoked and we headed back home.
9.30pm baked beans and straight to bed…. Dad hit the beers in relief.

– By Kyuss King (with a little help from dad).

Rasmus bedroom pits on broken boards and Kyuss and his favourite Hawaiian drink.

Seven free surfers embarked on a voyage to boldly go where no man had gone before.

Not that long ago, in an island chain far, far away, seven free surfers embarked on a voyage to boldly go where no man had gone before. Equipped with an array of surfboards, a packet of crayons and two ukuleles, their chances of success were slim. In pursuit of perfection, they were forced to navigate under the radar of a fleet of imperial boat charters. Despite numerous obstacles, the rebel alliance of wave-riding beatniks continued to make Galactik Tracks into a new surfing cosmos; their search for a Nirvana reaching its climax when they arrived at… The Island of Nowhere.

The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home on the Far North Coast of NSW.

Gathering is a short film from independent filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, the creator of the award-winning left of centre surf films Lines From a Poem, Seaworthy and The Heart & The Sea. The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home in the sacred playgrounds of the Far North Coast of New South Wales. The film explores Rastovich’s ideas around how the tension between the industrial and the natural in the surfing world unfolds in that place. Ultimately, Gathering celebrates how diversity and difference in ecosystems, relationships and surfing contribute to the preciousness of life. Gathering is easy on the eyes and ears and Tracks Magazine is proud to present it to you. Nathan Oldfield is a maverick, a filmmaker who wants a surf movie to say something important, to move us and make us grateful for the sea around us and the life within us. His films are quiet, beautiful and brimming with sacred purpose. Tim Winton, Acclaimed Australian Novelist
