Today’s Mondayitis beggars the question; why are the Mentawais so damn good? Well, when you get skunked for waves at most places that means you get nothing. When you get skunked in the Ments, you can still step into bombs like this one Charlie Carrol is tasting. Thanks to swell magnets like Thunders, in the southern part of the Mentawai necklace of jewels, skunked ain’t really skunked.
The late arvo light and lack of any other boats this day meant a lovely session all to ourselves too, and with the water colour reminiscent of some of the Westside of Oahu’s blue water reefs the Hawaiian boys felt right at home.
Charlie’s fellow Westside, mate, Sunny Garcia, (check his revealing interview in the next issue of Tracks) is the paddler, watching Charlie’s drop as he duck dives.
