An absolutely classic crew of surfers dominated the short right-hand reef break that I grew up surfing. From knee boarder Roger Buckingham, who’d smile at you from inside the tube like a child taking a piss in his wetsuit, to Michael Northcote, the boat-building salty dog who could squeeze in a power turn at wave’s end where most would be searching for an exit. The numero uno of oddballs though was a spindly goat-bearded lunatic tube-hound that went by the name of Marsupial. Supe’ was an enigma – especially to a 12-year-old greenhorn like me. He’d charge any wave, create mad Monty Python skit like conversations and belly laugh like a kookaburra with a mouthful of worms. His most endearing trait however was his deep-seated love for the reef itself. He’d sing love song dedications to the cunji below in Tourettes-styled out bursts. And that appreciation for the geographical wonders that afford us these mechanical waves has stayed with me. Just like the ‘Reef Boy’ in today’s Mondayitis, be sure to look around and marvel at the wonder of nature next time you surf a reef break. And if you know any Bronski Beat (in particular the dance club hit Hit That Perfect Beat), here’s a song you can sing in defiance of your next dangerous reef dance.
[Alternative lyrics thanks to our friend, Marsupial].
“Reef boy, reef boy, hit that fucking reef boy! Reef boy, Reef boy, hit that fucking reef boy… reef boy, reef boy, hit that fucking reef boy, hit that perfect, hit that perfect hit that perfect reef boy!”
Eveybody.
