Last weeks FREE ‘Modayitis’ wallpaper was Surfing Australia’s ‘photo of the year’ award winner, an amazing green gem of a wave shot by Jeremy Wilmotte. Today’s shot isn’t quite as famous. Despite this spectacular black flash shot of Taj Burrow kinking the lip at Hollow Trees in the Mentawai Islands being a one in a million – it’s never been published. Photographer Nate Smith explaining that,”you couldn’t go out and replicate this shot if you tried.” The water droplets appear to be shards of glass, orbiting the lower half of the frame like some science fiction movie freeze frame. Taj appears to be completely comfortable among the chaos and undaunted by the fact that it’s pitch dark. Nate assured me it was Taj’s last wave of the session and that as far as flash shot’s go, this one is special.
