Food for Thought

'Patagonia Provisions' to hit shelves.
Reading Time: 3 minutes

In a consumer world where we are confronted with overwhelming choice,
it helps to identify with a brand that has a reputation for delivering high quality
items, which have a minimal or positive impact on the planet.

Having developed surf hardware and outdoor apparel, based around the principles of sustainability and durability, Patagonia are now putting responsibly sourced food on the table.

The new line of tasty, responsibly-sourced food includes salmon, breakfast grains, soups and fruit and nut bars. According to the official press release on ‘Patagonia Provisions’ food production is one aspect of human endeavor where there is major scope to minimize impact through better practices.

Go camping with your Patagonia provisions and enjoy wild sockeye salmon on a bed of rock and rice-crackers.

“The food industry is one of the biggest industries on earth and a massive contributor to global warming. Most of our food is produced using methods that reduce biodiversity, decimate soil and contribute to climate change,” notes Birgit Cameron, sr. director for Patagonia Provisions. “Yet food done differently holds a special potential not only to reduce our negative impacts on the planet – but to reverse them entirely. That’s why Patagonia started a food business and we are thrilled to bring this message to Australia. We feel that the Australian market is ripe for change and very open and receiving of our message.”

To support the launch of Provisions, Patagonia has also announced free in-store tastings and screenings of 'Unbroken Ground' – a 25 minute film by director Chris Malloy of Farm League. Malloy, a former Momentum generation pro surfer, has made s successful segue into film-making and his credits include A Brokedown Melody, The Fisherman’s Son, Groundswell and  Thicker than Water.

Former pro surfer, Chris Malloy, is now a film-maker with an agenda to help save the planet.

‘Unbroken Ground’ tells the story of four pioneering groups – and the people behind them – leading the way with regenerative agriculture, restorative grazing, new crop development and selective-harvest fishing.

Gathering is a short film from independent filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, the creator of the award-winning left of centre surf films Lines From a Poem, Seaworthy and The Heart & The Sea. The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home in the sacred playgrounds of the Far North Coast of New South Wales. The film explores Rastovich’s ideas around how the tension between the industrial and the natural in the surfing world unfolds in that place. Ultimately, Gathering celebrates how diversity and difference in ecosystems, relationships and surfing contribute to the preciousness of life. Gathering is easy on the eyes and ears and Tracks Magazine is proud to present it to you. Nathan Oldfield is a maverick, a filmmaker who wants a surf movie to say something important, to move us and make us grateful for the sea around us and the life within us.
