Chris Hemsworth, Corona and Parley For The Oceans Unite To Fight Plastic Pollution.

Committing to protect 100 Islands against marine plastic pollution by 2020 and to turn them into symbols of change.
Reading Time: 2 minutes

An estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic waste enter the oceans every year. This is a huge problem and it infiltrates every known ecosystem and every level of the food chain. If current marine pollution trends continue, the oceans will contain more plastic than fish by the year 2050.

Now, in order to effect change, Corona and Parley for the Oceans have announced they are joining forces to help end marine plastic pollution.

The long-term goal of the partnership is to protect 100 Islands by 2020. This will take place in six key regions of the world – Mexico, Maldives, Australia, Chile, Italy and the Dominican Republic.

The partners will protect these regions by implementing Parley’s creative, multidisciplinary approach and signature formula, the Parley AIR Strategy (Avoid, Intercept, Redesign).

“Avoid” includes initiatives to educate people on the importance of reducing plastic use. “Intercept” is a comprehensive approach to collect existing waste using various methods from high seas to coastlines. “Redesign” addresses innovation around materials, products and new ways of using them.

Corona and Parley are also engaging like-minded ambassadors to represent the partnership in their respective countries. This includes Chilean big wave charger Ramon Navarro and Australia’s own surfing superstar Chris Hemsworth.

“I've spent a large part of my life in and around the ocean, says Chris. “It's where a lot of my happiest memories came from. If I had anxieties or worries, I'd head to the ocean and it was always the place where I could reset and be 100% present. A recent experience in the Maldives made it obvious how our short-term use of plastic has a long-term damaging effect on our oceans. I’m thrilled to be a part of this program, because I want to inspire people to find a solution and protect the world’s oceans so future generations can enjoy them like I do.”

Gathering is a short film from independent filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, the creator of the award-winning left of centre surf films Lines From a Poem, Seaworthy and The Heart & The Sea. The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home in the sacred playgrounds of the Far North Coast of New South Wales. The film explores Rastovich’s ideas around how the tension between the industrial and the natural in the surfing world unfolds in that place. Ultimately, Gathering celebrates how diversity and difference in ecosystems, relationships and surfing contribute to the preciousness of life. Gathering is easy on the eyes and ears and Tracks Magazine is proud to present it to you. Nathan Oldfield is a maverick, a filmmaker who wants a surf movie to say something important, to move us and make us grateful for the sea around us and the life within us.
