Gold Coast Queensland, Sunday 8th November, 2009: COURAN Cove Island Resort in conjunction with Surfing Queensland is proud to announce an extraordinary new addition to the 2010 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Australasian Pro Junior Men’s tour – The Couran Cove Island Resort Pro Junior.

Running from February 1-5 (2010), the Grade-4, AUD$20,000 specialty event will be the first of its kind on South Stradbroke Island (Queensland, Australia) and will offer surfers a never before seen competitive opportunity at a Pro Junior surfing event within Australia.

Similar to an ASP World Championship Tour competition, The Couran Cove Island Resort Pro Junior will be based around a unique ‘island format,’ with the unparalleled competition designed to give competitors optimal surfing conditions throughout the event’s duration.

While living in four-star accommodation at Couran Cove Island Resort, competitors will be “On-Call” between 6.00am – 5.00pm everyday, where experienced contest directors will have the luxury of monitoring conditions and placing competitors in the best available waves.

“We are extremely excited to host this world-class surfing event here at Couran Cove Island Resort,” said Scott Hayden, General Manager.

“Couran Cove Island Resort is certainly a unique holiday destination, and we are keen to showcase all that we offer through this equally unique surfing event. We are all very much looking forward to this experience,” he said.

Furthermore, there will never be a dull moment amongst the party atmosphere of the Couran Cove Island Resort Pro Junior.

When the hottest Pro Junior surfers in the world aren’t ripping apart the world-class beach breaks surrounding South Stradbroke Island’s Couran Cove Island Resort, they will be taking full advantage of the myriad of resort facilities.

Competitors will have the option of kicking back in style by the poolside bars or taking part in coordinated activities including tennis, mini-golf, sporting games, yoga and gym classes or for the more adventurous, jet skiing, fishing, wake-boarding and kayaking just to name a few.

Another important detail regarding The Couran Cove Island Resort Pro Junior is the fact that the event will become the second competition of a now three-event Queensland leg of the Australasian Pro Junior Men’s Tour in 2010, which already includes the Hurley Burleigh Pro Junior (January 22-26) and the Oakley Pro Junior (February 9-13).

Surfing Queensland Chief Executive Officer Craig Harland said the new event will offer the aspiring junior surfers a glimpse of what life is like for their surfing heroes on the World Championship Tour (WCT).

“Not only will the competition format be run like a WCT event, but the competitors will also be living in luxury at Couran Cove Island Resort,” said Harland.

“The new event at Couran Cove Island Resort also means that within a three-week period, there will now be three world-class ASP Australasia Pro Junior surfing events right here in Queensland,” he said.

Surfers wishing to compete in the event from any world region can enter via their regional ASP office.

The Couran Cove Island Resort Pro Junior will commence on February 1 and conclude on February 5, 2010.

Seven free surfers embarked on a voyage to boldly go where no man had gone before.

Not that long ago, in an island chain far, far away, seven free surfers embarked on a voyage to boldly go where no man had gone before. Equipped with an array of surfboards, a packet of crayons and two ukuleles, their chances of success were slim. In pursuit of perfection, they were forced to navigate under the radar of a fleet of imperial boat charters. Despite numerous obstacles, the rebel alliance of wave-riding beatniks continued to make Galactik Tracks into a new surfing cosmos; their search for a Nirvana reaching its climax when they arrived at… The Island of Nowhere.

Gathering is a short film from independent filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, the creator of the award-winning left of centre surf films Lines From a Poem, Seaworthy and The Heart & The Sea. The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home in the sacred playgrounds of the Far North Coast of New South Wales. The film explores Rastovich’s ideas around how the tension between the industrial and the natural in the surfing world unfolds in that place. Ultimately, Gathering celebrates how diversity and difference in ecosystems, relationships and surfing contribute to the preciousness of life. Gathering is easy on the eyes and ears and Tracks Magazine is proud to present it to you. Nathan Oldfield is a maverick, a filmmaker who wants a surf movie to say something important, to move us and make us grateful for the sea around us and the life within us. His films are quiet, beautiful and brimming with sacred purpose. Tim Winton, Acclaimed Australian Novelist
