ANOTHER DAY
of high class small wave surfing at Macauley’s Beach in Coffs Harbour as the Action Sports Ready Australian Junior Surfing Titles presented by Soundwave heads towards the serious stage.
School Surfing divisions again took most of the day’s action and in the round robin format of this division semi finalists across most divisions are being decided.
Queensland and NSW teams are traditionally very dominant and they again appear to be on track to securing multiple Australian schools titles with Victorian schools also quite well placed at what is about the half way stage of this mammoth week of surfing.
Contest Director and former 1988 World Surfing Champion Barton Lynch is diligently working this event to get the best possible surf for these competitors to compete in.
Holley Sue Coffey knows even in small waves a good bottom turn is crucial if you want to get vertical.
On today’s mid day high tide Lynch called the event on-hold, electing to wait out the deep high tide conditions and restarted the event approximately two hours later on the out-going tide – a move appreciated by the talented young surfers.
Re-Qualifying rounds of Girls and Boys under 18 divisions were run today and a few of the unlikely surfers who ended up in the requalifying rounds lifted their performance game today to easily advance and put themselves back in contention.
Byron Bay surfer Kirsten Ogden, who last year won the Australian under 16 Girls title impressively won her heat today.
“I’d love to win an under 18 Australian Title as well and this is also an important event for me to try and qualify for the World Junior Titles in South America next year. I just hope the waves get a little bigger” said Ogden.
Bronte Macaulay from the Margaret River region in Western Australia was also very impressive top scoring in the Girls under 18 round two heats with 14.75 out of a possible 20 for her two scoring waves and advancing to round three.
Contest organizers are utilizing the experience of ASP renown surfer Harley Ingelby to find the best waves and there’s a chance they’ll search out other beaches for tomorrows fourth day which could see the quarter finals of the individual divisions.
Organizers are also hoping the end-of-week southerly change delivers bigger surf for these talented surfers who are all chasing prestigious Australian Junior Titles.
