Tracks, Morning Of The Earth (MOTE) and Morning Of The Earth Surfboards have teamed up with Mudyala, an Aboriginal not-for-profit charitable organisation to raise money for those who need it. MOTE are auctioning off some incredible memorabilia including a replicated surfboard used by Dave Treloar in the film. The board was made by MOTE shaper Simon Jones to help assist the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) community of Clarence Valley Council.
The most prized possession of the auction is a replica of Dave ‘Baddy’ Treloar’s ‘Farmhouse Special’ Surfboard, which was ridden in the film. The board is signed by Stephen Cooney, Albe Falzon, Rusty Miller and Paul Hutchinson. Revered shaper Simon Jones created the replica and the current highest bid in the auction is at $3,550.
David ‘Baddy’ Treloar was a surfing icon who was best known for his role in the Morning Of The Earth. The image of Baddy sanding a board outside a rustic country shack and then taking apart the point at Angourie remains one of the most iconic scenes in surf film history. David was also a father figure and mentor to some of Yamba and Angourie’s most accomplished surfers including Dan Ross and Laurie Towner. David sadly passed away in 2019 on the beach of his beloved Angourie point.
Following David’s death, shaper Simon Jones was given a digital file of Baddy’s shapes, this included the surfboards he rode in MOTE. Simon described the process of replicating the board and its significance, “It was a pleasure to build this board, to me it is another spark in the MOTE story that will travel out and inspire us all to lead lives of purpose, respect for others and the importance of being faithful observers of the natural world.”
Just as David looked after young surfers in the area, the charity Mudyala operate programs to help ATSI children and teens by providing a range of activities instil pride in their culture. Funds raised from the auction will contribute to children and youth programs run by Mudyala in the Clarence Valley areas which includes David’s beloved Angourie and Yamba. This increases Mudyala’s capacity to run activities, increasing community assets based of need, facilitating activities for local Aboriginal children and youth. All for the purpose of increased engaging activities for the ATSI children and youth.
Another surfboard named ‘The Morning Of The Earth’ is up for auction. The board has the signature Albe Falzon mothership artwork gracing its deck and was shaped for one of Australia’s best free-surfers Torren Martyn.
