Two days after a baby humpback whale washed up at a (relatively) nearby beach, surfers at Margaret River’s Redgate Beach are reported to have been swooped by a “large” shark mid morning today.

Social media lit up with reports a “massive great white” made its presence felt about 8.30am.

A quick visit to the surfer’s best friend, Shark Smart revealed as much, but it also revealed that wasn’t the only bit of activity to be going down.

Four tiger sharks, all above 3m were tagged and released off Moses Rock beach (where the dead whale is) while a 2.7 metre “unknown” species of shark was spotted off Gnarabup Beach.

The activity isn’t just restricted to the southwest though, beacons off the coast of Perth and surrounds are also lighting up with repeated white shark detections, proving if nothing else, the early detection system is working.

An estimated 30,000 whales are making their way down the WA coast as part of the annual migratory pattern.

Think it a coinkydink that the sharks are following? Is that a bad thing?
