A 51-year-old surfer has died after being fatally wounded when he was struck by a board while surfing Surfer’s Point in the beach suburb of Prevelly, Margaret River.
It is understood the injury was suffered when the board struck him and severed a femoral artery, the main artery that supplies blood to both legs.
Police and St John Ambulance officers arrived at the Surfer’s Point car park in Prevelly just after 11am.
Several police officers travelled with the injured man, assisting paramedics on route to the hospital, but the man died a short time later.
The surfer was believed to be holidaying in WA and was from New South Wales.
Another witness at the scene has said the man lost a lot of blood through a wound appeared to have damaged his femoral artery.
Surfer’s Point is a popular spot with local surfers and attracted the world’s best surfers earlier this year in April for the Drug Aware Pro.
According to WA journalist and Tracks contributor, Anthony Pancia, who was surfing when the incident occurred, conditions were solid with a spike in swell mid morning which may have taken the victim off guard.
“The swell itself had a funny little angle to it, lots of wide close outs and was really heaving on the inside ledge,” he said.
Asked whether it was a spot notorious for people bailing boards he replied, “Lots of people ditch there boards out there, it’s kinda what you do over a certain size and everyone tends to ride bigger boards.”
“But everyone also tends to have a quick look behind them before bailing. But the swell had some real punch to it.”
“I guess this morning looked deceptively mellow from the carpark but again, there were some solid sets just popped up,” he said.
A report is being prepared for the WA Coroner.
