UNDER THE HOOD…

Originally designed as a modern high-performance take on a keel fin fish or mini simmons. The wide outline and full boxy rail give plenty of paddle power and speed in small waves. The short wide outline combined with the single into deep double concave make for a board that’s fast down the line but smooth and tight through carves. It’s surprisingly versatile and can be surfed hard off the tail or with light feet for those guys that like to punt. Choose the Original tail for the Original Fling experience, the hip squash for a more pivoty, top to bottom feeling, or the wing swallow for the best of both.

SHELDON’S CONCLUSION…

‘The Fling’ was a very unorthodox looking piece of equipment. The sheer width of the nose and tail of this board made it one to marvel at. In spite of this, the board was very easy to transition onto and made junky waves extremely fun. The boxy rails, volume up forward and flatter rocker made for a very forgiving feeling underfoot. In small, wind-troubled conditions it planed confidently and not once fell victim to the tremulous, uncertain feeling that northerly wind chops can cause in a board. It paddled well, had a reassuringly large sweet spot, and gathered speed effortlessly even in the most abysmal waves. The wide tail also made the board really loose, which was a nice touch in smaller surf, enabling it to release with ease. Moreover, beyond the lip surfing was invited by the excess nose area which helped to both launch and acted as a landing pad. If you’re bored with surfing standard equipment in small waves ‘The Fling’ is the remedy. Its distinctive design and arsenal of small wave attributes make it both extremely fun and unique to ride. If anything is certain on this board, it is that you will have fun riding it.

SHELDON’S CONCLUSION…

Crafted with Superbrand’s ‘Superflex’ epoxy materials, ‘The Fling’ in EPS had all the spring and liveliness necessary to have fun in even the most gutless conditions. The combination of both the EPS materials and the boards flatter, wider profile created an electric feeling. From the take-off it had speed in surplus. Not once did I catch myself pumping laboriously or bouncing to get going. Much the same, the down the line speed was intense. This was thanks to the unique flex patterns of the ‘Superflex’ construction which produced something of a slingshot feeling. Like its PU cousin it was loose through manoeuvres due to the width of the tail. This was an enjoyable feature in junky waves as it allowed me to slide about and not succumb to the awkward stickiness that most boards suffer in small surf. Again, like the PU, the board was great in the air. Its supreme speed made it feel like there was always the option of going beyond the lip and the pop of the EPS only enhanced this feeling. This board is a must for the upcoming onslaught of dismal summer surf. Get one in the quiver and find yourself frothing on the days that would generally warrant a sleep in.

PU V EPS

Given that ‘The Fling’ is specifically designed to perform in slop, the EPS version is by far my preference. It was capable of doing everything that the PU was except with more speed and zeal. It turned a mundane session into a fun one purely by its quick and zippy feeling. On the contrary, the PU still made average surf fun and for those who don’t necessarily enjoy the feeling of EPS it would be a sensible option. However, for me I couldn’t look past the exuberance of the EPS and would pick it nine times out of 10 over the PU.
