SHAPERS CUP: Narrow victory for Sharp Eye Surfboards at the Oi Rio Pro

Update on the World Shapers Cup as the WSL heads to J Bay!

Yellow Jersey holder Filipe Toledo (5) put on a masterful performance for Sharp Eye Surfboards in his third win in a row at Rio. Sharp Eye would finish with 11 points at the event with Toledo’s victory (5), Johanne Defay’s runner up finish (3), Tatiana Weston-Webb third place (2) and Miguel Pupo making it to the quarter’s (1). Sharp Eye’s Head Shaper Marcio Zouvi was present at Saquarema beach to watch the success of his stacked roster.

Lost Surfboards (10) nearly went back-to-back at Rio finishing in second place, only one point behind Shapers Cup leaders Sharp Eye. World no.1 Carissa Moore (5) picked up her first CT win of the year which gave Lost a five-point push. While team rider’s Yago Dora (2) and Gabriel Bryan’ (2) both made the semis plus Caroline Marks (1) making the quarters.

Lost Surfboards finally took over rivals DHD surfboards for second place on the Shapers Cup leader board. DHD only scored two points at Rio with Connor O’Leary and Isabella Nichols quarterfinals finishes. O’Leary continues to make various switches with his boards this year using DHD Surfboards for the first time at Rio. The Australian so far in 2022 has competed on Lost, Town and Country and DHD Surfboards.

OHP Surfboards solo team rider Samuel Pupo (3) made the final at Rio and gave OHP a much needed three points to stay clear from being 2022 Shapers Cup wooden spoon. Pyzel surfboards misfortune continues for the once Shapers Cup favourite as they fall down the leader board with the absence of superstars Tyler Wright and John John Florence. Gabriel Medina suffered a knee injury at Rio and is out of J-Bay, taking away momentum from Cabianca Surfboards who has been one of Shapers Cup recent biggest movers.

Biggest Fall – Pyzel Surfboards (0)

Some other Shapers Cup news is Sharp Eye Surfboards announced that Jack Robinson is officially a team-rider. Jack started riding Sharp Eye Surfboards in Mexico last season where he picked up his maiden CT win. It was not clear whether Robbo would be a full-time Sharp Eye rider as he used his former shaper Arakawa’s boards for the Hawaiian leg of the CT this year. Following Pipe and Sunset Jack has been competing with a Sharp Eye board and has been on an absolute tear. Jack has picked up two CT wins, a third place and quarter final finish since his switch to Sharp Eye Surfboards amassing 13 points in the Shapers Cup.

Waiting period for the next WSL event at J-Bay begins on July 12th. CT Surfers will be stoked with a world-class point-break to compete at after battling in average conditions at El Salvador and Rio. Wildcards for the event have not been announced. Can Lost Surfboards continue their climb up the leader board with Carissa’s form and embark on a Hail-Mary comeback against commanding leaders Sharp Eye?

WORLD SHAPERS CUP – EXPLAINER

What is the World Shapers Cup?
The Tracks World Shapers Cup is a competition that rewards the shapers who create the boards for the WSL competitors.

Why do we have a World Shapers Cup?

Tracks believe shapers for World Surf League competitors deserve recognition for their work like the car manufacturers in the Formula One.

F1 have a World Constructors Cup which is a prestigious, points-based competition that rewards…you guessed it: the constructors. Move aside athletes, without the constructors you’re nothing.

What is the WSC competition format?

We are scoring from the quarters on, so if your surfer cant get past the heats then no points are on offer.

Points Are Awarded As Follows

If a surfer finishes in the quarters the shaper will be awarded one point.

A semi-final finish is two points.

The runner-up gets three points.

The winning shaper gets a lil bonus, earning five points for a win

What is the prize for the winner of the WSC?
We’re kicking it off with $10,000 worth of advertising across Tracks Media to use as you wish.
And the most amazing trophy in the history of surf or whatever we can work out between now and the final.
