SYDNEY (Sunday, January 20, 2013): Strong southerlies created tricky conditions for the finalists on the last day of the Teenage Rampage OZ Invitational presented by Ocean and Earth at Maroubra.

Contestants showed some incredible talent and flair to notch up some solid scores in the testing surf.

Narrabeen’s Cooper Chapman charged hard, straight off the bat in his opening 20-and-under heat. Cooper threw down a series of technical fin wafts and reverses to score a heat total of 12.97.

Connor O’Leary showed why he was the second seed when he walked away with a two wave combination 16.26. The Cronulla surfer managed to link together a series of highly technical backhand snaps that impressed both the spectators and the judges.

“I actually had fun out there,” said Connor after the heat. “I found a couple of decent little waves that hugged the bank and had some scoring potential.”

An expression session took place prior to the finals with former World Tour surfers, Phil Macdonald, Blake Thornton, Drew Courtney, Trent Munro and former ASP Australasian Junior Champion Stuart Kennedy all taking part. All surfers locked in some high scoring waves, but in the end it was Stuart Kennedy who got the win.

The wind began to mellow by the time the finals kicked off in the mid-afternoon allowing the finalists to push each other in a quest for victory.

Jacob Wilcox snatched an early lead in the 16-and-under boys final. The West Australian threw down a series of lightening fast carves and whips to take the win with a two wave total of 14.77. Kalani Ball, Jackson Giles and Quinn Bruce finished in second, third and fourth respectively.

In the 16-and-under girls final, Holly Wawn, Billie Melinz, Paris Whittaker and Tess Mawson fought a tight battle until Holly nabbed a wave, which allowed two giant cracks and a massive fin waft. The judges rewarded the ride with a 9.33 and as a result Holly took the win. Billie Melinz finished in second, Paris in third and Tess in fourth.

Local Maroubra surfer Max Mcguigan saved the best for last when he smashed out a nine-point ride to take the lead in the 13-and-under boys final. Kyuss King, Sandon Whittaker and Kaya Horne were left chasing the local kid for the majority of the heat, but were unable to catch the powerful goofy. Kyuss King finished in second with Sandon Whittaker in third.

The final of the 13-and-under girls saw a see-sawing battle between the four finalists until the final five minutes when Avoca’s Macy Callaghan smashed out a series of backhand whacks to bag herself a 7.17 wave score. Bodhi Leigh-Jones finished in second, Kiara Meredith in third and Kirra-Belle Olsson in fourth.

Top-seed Cooper Chapman held down the lead for the majority of the 20-and-under boys final until Cronulla’s Rory Jenkins jagged a punchy right, which allowed him to perform a chain of lightening fast forehand cracks. As a result, Rory finished the heat with a 14.94 total and Cooper was relegated to second position with Connor O’Leary finishing in third and Shane Campbell landing in fourth. Rory scored $1000.00 for his efforts.

Holly Wawn took out the Carve Of The Day award for her performance in the 16-and-under final. Holly scored a pair of polarised Carve sunglasses for his efforts.

The Dominelli Group gave spectators the opportunity to browse through the latest range of Peugeots from Dominelli Prestige at Arncliffe. Professional surfer and Dominelli spokesman Stuart Kennedy was also on hand talking competitors through a range of the latest Firewire surfboards and Dominelli vehicles.

The Australian Skin Cancer Clinics were on site again providing parents, competitors and spectators with vouchers for a free consultation at their Maroubra store.

Since 2007, more than 2500 kids have participated in the O&E Teenage Rampage around Australia. 2013 will be the first year the former grassroots junior’s series will be compressed and fine-tuned into an elite invitational event.
