The drone’s low-altitude orbit offers a different perspective on the savage majesty of John John’s attack. Florence flings his arms wide and executes not so much a turn as a scarring of the sea; wielding his red-stained blade through a crescent-shaped arc that leaves a wound stretching five-board lengths behind him. John John typically likes to ride between 6’0” and 6’2’ so that means there is some 30-feet of deeply gouged wave face in his wake and he’s only halfway through the turn. With a little help from the J-Bay offshores he’s also displaced a paddock of water, leaving the bobbing photographer half-wondering if he shouldn’t get too close, lest a hard-flung droplet takes out an eye.
