North Stradbroke Island, Queensland (on Sunday 5th February, 2012) – PETERSON Crisanto (Brazil) has taken out the 2012 5-Star, AUD$30,000 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Oakley Pro Junior in thrilling fashion defeating reigning Junior Series champion Thomas Woods (Burleigh Heads, Qld).

Epic one-metre, right-hand pointbreak waves again rolled through North Stradbroke Island’s Cylinders Beach, as last year’s event runner-up Crisanto went one better in 2012, winning a nail-biting 30-minute decider.

Crisanto now has a 2-0 lead over Woods in ASP Australasia Pro Junior finals, with the flying Brazilian also edging out the Australian in last year’s final of the 2011 Burleigh Heads Pro Junior – Reinforcing a Crisanto-Woods rivalry, which could well and truly culminate on the elite ASP Men’s World Tour in years to come.

In today’s final, Crisanto posted a combined two-wave heat total of 12.50 points (out of possible 20), including a crucial 4.00 ride on his last wave to snatch victory from Woods (12.25) in the final minute of the heat.

New South Wales Central Coast pairing Wade Carmichael (Avoca, NSW) and Jake Sylvester (Newcastle, NSW) both placed equal third overall, bowing out to Crisanto and Woods respectively in the semi-final round.

Matt Banting (Port Macquarie, NSW) and local 13-year-old rising star Ethan Ewing shared the honours during the JS Tractor Big Boost expressions sessions, which saw 12 hand-picked competitors (four locals, four Australians and four international competitors) compete for three brand new custom JS surfboards.

Running from February 1-5 and held in the varying breaks surrounding the island paradise, the Oakley Pro Junior is the third stop on the prestigious ASP Australasia Pro Junior Men’s tour.

Seven free surfers embarked on a voyage to boldly go where no man had gone before.

Not that long ago, in an island chain far, far away, seven free surfers embarked on a voyage to boldly go where no man had gone before. Equipped with an array of surfboards, a packet of crayons and two ukuleles, their chances of success were slim. In pursuit of perfection, they were forced to navigate under the radar of a fleet of imperial boat charters. Despite numerous obstacles, the rebel alliance of wave-riding beatniks continued to make Galactik Tracks into a new surfing cosmos; their search for a Nirvana reaching its climax when they arrived at… The Island of Nowhere.

The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home on the Far North Coast of NSW.

Gathering is a short film from independent filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, the creator of the award-winning left of centre surf films Lines From a Poem, Seaworthy and The Heart & The Sea. The film features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home in the sacred playgrounds of the Far North Coast of New South Wales. The film explores Rastovich’s ideas around how the tension between the industrial and the natural in the surfing world unfolds in that place. Ultimately, Gathering celebrates how diversity and difference in ecosystems, relationships and surfing contribute to the preciousness of life. Gathering is easy on the eyes and ears and Tracks Magazine is proud to present it to you. Nathan Oldfield is a maverick, a filmmaker who wants a surf movie to say something important, to move us and make us grateful for the sea around us and the life within us. His films are quiet, beautiful and brimming with sacred purpose. Tim Winton, Acclaimed Australian Novelist
