Gettin’ Square, Cloudbreak, Fiji

Cloudbreak greet the women with thunder and fury on day one of the Women's Fiji Pro.

It was the first time the girls where back at Fiji since 2006. Contrary to this gem that slipped through the pack it wasn’t perfect. A lowish tide, wind and the reality of surfing the place for the first time meet the majority of competitors. Malia Manual was the standout of the day, attacking the lip and looking the most comfortable in the lineup. Nikki Van Dijk suffered the worst wipeout of the day, kissing the reef with her face and wound needing medical treatment post heat. Photographer Peter Joli Wilson is there and commented on the action. “There was small surf to start off with but it pulsed with the tide and got to a decent size this afternoon. Sounds like they want to run tomorrow but it could be at Restaurants if the swell is too big for the girls at Cloudbreak. The size and the injury to Nikki rattled a few of the girls.” Photo: Joli
