Since the start of the year, the surfing world has seen endless amounts of world class tubes ridden. Whether it be from one of Hawaii’s best winters to date, or the all time conditions that Cyclone Alfred delivered to the Gold Coast, each corner of the globe has had its moments. The best of those barrels were captured in the first ever Cooly Kids Classic Keg Contest and the winners have been handsomely rewarded.
The online video contest, ran by Simon ‘Shagga’ Saffigna, and judged by the likes of Joel Parkinson, Mark Occhilupo, Dean Morrison and Bruce Irons, saw entrants submit their best barrel clips from January through to March. Submissions featured groms younger than 10, all the way through to those pushing 50 in the Masters category. The prizes included $5k in cash, a number of different surf trips, resort stays and goodie packs from various brands.
Harry Bryant took home the $5k for his second reef roll in at Pipeline in February. “Sitting out the back at big Pipeline, someone told me it’s like money,” Harry said. “Time is money going into a bank account. You can sit out there for hours on end and not even get a look or catch a wave. But the time spent out there is like money going into an account. And one day, the wave will come and you’ll go straight to the ATM, pull the cash out and walk away.”
Another standout amongst the plethora of winners in the video above was Jay Phillips in the Masters category for his freight train Kirra drainer during Cyclone Alfred last month. “The wave was pretty goddamn good,” he said. “When I came out the barrel it was a little bit of a claim, but it was one for Tommy Peterson because we had just had a paddle out for him a week prior to that Cyclone Alfred swell.”
