Victor Bernardo is one of the most likeable surfers on the planet. He’s humble and friendly on land. In the water he has a style and grace you’d expect from an alternative craft connoisseur, but also the power and flare of your favourite CT surfer.
The 28-year-old Brazilian’s surf career originally developed on the QS for close to a decade, before he eventually found his true calling and stepped away from competitive surfing to explore alternative designs and create a path for himself as a free surfer.
He’s now been riding Matt Parker’s ‘Album’ designs for four years and has become a staple in Matt’s team. In the second installment of Album’s latest YT series ‘Infinite Difference’, Matt explores his relationship with Victor.
“He comes from a competitive background of doing contests and QS’s and that whole circus. He always did well in that stuff because he surfs amazing but I think once he was free from that, free from the constraints of that approach and what’s expected of you in that world and he was free to express himself, you see him just bloom into this amazing surfer. I wouldn’t even call him a free surfer because he could compete and he would be even more successful now. His surfing is just beautiful, it’s so appealing to everybody,” said Matt.
“Even when he was back doing contests and competing and travelling the world, he would always try to fit a unique board in his bag. You see most tour guys and they have a bag of 12 5″11 shortboards that all look exactly the same. He (Victor) always had an affinity and interest in the kind of curiosity about riding different boards and would always find ways to do that.”
