During his time on the CT, Zeke Lau was a competitive beast. The native-Hawaiian had a fiery personality and wore his heart on his sleeve.
Born into a disciplined family, sport had always been at the centre of Zeke’s life. However, surfing was not always one of them. Zeke’s dad was a football coach and he grew up in that environment, one he has previously labelled as ‘aggressive’ and something which he admitted carried through to his attitude towards competitive surfing.
His time on tour was never free from drama. Think the sit on John John at Bells tactics, the interferences at Pipe and Sunset, as well as a couple of stints back on the Challenger.
Nowadays it’s rare to see Zeke in a jersey. Since the birth of his daughter Luna his outlook on competitive surfing and life in general has changed. This shift is explored in the new 20 minute film titled ‘New Moon’, directed by Matt Heirakuji, which takes a deep dive into many of the controversial incidents surrounding Zeke, his thought processes while fighting on the Challenger to get back to the big leagues and his mindset shift in recent years.
It also shows Zeke as the family-first person he is and explores how riding for local Hawaiian company AVVA, run by Lau’s friend Kekoa Cazimero, has had a positive impact on his life.
There is also cameo appearances from CT surfers and Zeke’s friends such as Seth Moniz, Carissa Moore and Leo Fioravanti.
The 20 minute documentary is raw, personal and gives a unique insight into one of the tours best competitors who is often so misunderstood.
