Earlier this month the Rip Curl Padang Padang Cup ran within the first few days of the waiting period in what was the biggest conditions the event has seen for a number of years. As well as perfect six foot tubes reeling down the short stretch of reef, there were eight foot wash throughs for surfers to deal with. The comp was eventually taken out by 16-year-old Indo wonderkids Westen Hirst and Jasmine Struder.
While all eyes were glued to Bali’s Bukit, the same swell lit up the rest of the Indonesian archipelago. One particular Greenbush session was captured on Nasi Nick Nick’s YouTube channel. Here’s what he had to say about the session:
“This was the biggest swell of the Indonesian dry season. They were running the Padang Cup back in Bali, while we had our own special afternoon on the other side of the archipelago. The local boat captains were calling it the best day of the season for this spot, validated by every set wave spitting.
“In the morning I took a fin to the leg, ended up with four stitches, patched it and paddled back out for the evening session when the lineup went from 40 guys to just a handful, as everyone was getting injured or started hitting the beers too early.
“One of the rare sessions where the Indo dream does still exist.”
