Larry Blair takes on Wayne Lynch at the 1978 surfabout final at North Steyne which Larry won despite Wayne being the over whelming favourite and current Aussie champ at the time.
“Then and afterwards, Wayne was a better surfer, but I’d won the competition, thanks to that one freak wave, right in front of a prime-time Channel Nine audience, a jam-packed Manly beach, and Mum. It was my first professional contest victory and nobody had expected it, especially the ever-gracious Wayne Lynch,” said Larry in his autobiography ‘The Outside’.
