Since the first waves were trimmed across on a board, surfers have relied mostly on fixed geographical points and submerged reefs to supply their fun. The only possibility for the creation of a new wave was a serious seismic event and no one ever prayed for an earthquake. Rock-walls, scuttled ships and sand dredgers have played their part, giving us a taste of man made intervention in wave formation, but the advent of wave pools now means surfers can get excited about a legitimate and permanent ‘new wave’.
At 5.3 million, Sydney is Australia’s most populous city and likely plays host to its largest surfing population. News that Urbnsurf is set to open its new Sydney pool at Homebush next Autumn will no doubt be well received by the Emerald city surfers. Meanwhile, residents from Sydney’s western suburbs will be gifted a man-made beach they can readily access. Rick Kane will meet Bondi’s Cheyne Horan at Sydney’s Urbnsurf. Wild times ahead..
