Over the past few days, it seems like the entire world has been pumping. Teahupo’o has been XL just days before the WSL CT window kicks off, Indo has been doing its dry season thing with the Rip Curl Padang Padang Cup being held in cooking six-eight foot tubes and the East Coast of Australia has been firing for days on end. Anyone not able to get in on the action could only sit and watch with envy as our social media feeds have been fed with endless reels of surf jealousy.
Given the fact that some of the world’s best waves have been lighting up, you may be surprised to know that the most viral and talked about moment came at a lesser known spot on Sydney’s Northern Beaches – the Queenscliff Bombie. The deep water big wave spot usually only breaks once every couple years as it needs the perfect combination of East swell and offshore winds to get going. However, the bombie has come to life twice in the past three months and the man of the moment on both occasions was Tommy Myers – president of the Freshwater Boardriders.
Tommy made headlines back in April when he took off on an XXL cavern at the bombie, knifed himself under the lip and disappeared in the barrel before being blown out into the channel in front of two of his best mates. People on Instagram compared the wave to Mavericks or Jaws, but it just so happened to be round the corner from Freshwater, a vibrant suburb where Tommy resides.
In almost identical fashion, Tommy once again proved to be the king of the Queensy bombie earlier this week when he hucked himself over the ledge and pulled into a lengthy XXL drainer, which despite going almond shape and almost clamping, spat him right out into the channel.
The clip went viral on social media and even the GOAT 11x World Champ Kelly Slater chimed in, commenting: “Same guy? Almost same looking wave! That’s amazing.”
As well as Tommy’s wave, there were a number of other excellent rides that day, as well as endless beatings and wipeouts. All of which were captured in Manly Surf TV’s latest YouTube edit.
